Pear tree 'Duchesse d’Angoulême'

Geographic origin: Asia minor.

Adult size: Height up to 15 metres, width up to 10 metres.

Foliage: Deciduous.

Type of soil: Rich, moist and light, not too chalky or too much clay

Climate: Hardy to -20°C.

Position: Full sun.

Pollinators: Conference, William’s.

Characteristis and uses: The pear tree is ideal to embellish any medium sized or large garden. In a small garden, a fan type tree is a better choice as it will take less space. In the spring you will enjoy its beautiful white and pink flowers, but you need to be patient and wait until the autumn to pick its lovely sun ripened fruits... A tip, to know if a pear is ready to pick, hold it and turn it gently, if it comes away easily with its stalk then it is ready. Keep it inside for a few days before eating, as this will allow it to be at its best!

Looking after a pear tree is a year round job, with a good feed in the spring; an annual prune and a regular look out for signs of disease.

The pear tree ‘Duchesse d’Angoulême’ produces very large yellow fruits that are dappled with brown; the flesh is delicate and sweet. They are ready to pick between September and November.
