Characteristics and Uses: Beautiful flowers in spring are hanging catkins. Smoothed bark, grey-green, with gradually  marked trunk at the base.  Lateral root growth prevents this tree from being planted too close to buildings.  This beautiful tree is very vigorous and is planted alone in parks, in rows or within windbreak hedges.  The very supple white wood with a very fine grain is very much appreciated.
