Soil type: Sandy, poor and dry

Properties and uses:
The Filao or Casuarina equisetifolia - common names Coastal She-oak or Horsetail She-oak - takes its name from the Latin equisetum, meaning ‘horsehair’ referring to the resemblance of the drooping branchlets to horse tails.
The Filao tree is widely found on the tropical and subtropical coasts, in poor, salty grounds; it helps stabilizing the dunes and the coastline. This plant is able to fix atmospheric nitrogen thanks to its roots. The wood is very hard and used to make fences or firewood.
