Everything about: Pepper, Mountain

Mountain Pepper - Tasmannia lanceolata (latin)

Area of origin: Australia
Adult Dimensions: Height up to 2.50 m, width up to 1.50 m
Foliage: Evergreen
Soil Type: Deep, moist and humus rich, preferably acidic
Hardiness: Hardy to -10°C.
Exposure: Partial shade to full sun

Characteristics and uses:
The Mountain Pepper is a dense aromatic tree.
Young stems are red in colour and contrast with the shiny, dark green leaves. Bark and leaves are strongly cinnamon-scented.
The clusters of white, wax-like flowers appear in May and they also have a spicy fragrance.
The flowers are dioecious so you need to plant several trees: 1 male plant can pollinate 5 female plants. This way, you will obtain grapes of red berries, which turn black when ripe.
Their taste is both spicy and fruity, close to pepper and blackberry combined. The berries are used to give flavour to meat or desserts.
The Mountain Pepper has been used in England as windbreakers for several decades.

Plant them now: the shortest way to your plate is through your garden!
